Swim in a volcano!

Posted by Dan on October 17, 2010 at 9:21 PM Comments comments (0)

Hi all,

The AquaDucks are doing "the swim of a lifetime" in Crater Lake next
summer. The swim in approximately 5 miles long and will start on Wizard
Island and finish back at the Volcano Boat Cruises dock on the north side
of Crater Lake at Cleetwood Cove. We are not swimming across Crater Lake,
but somewhat close to the shore. This is not a race, but more of a swim
adventure. It is an opportunity to swim in one of the most beautiful lakes in
the world and enjoy each other's company.

Safety is the number one concern. There are no safety boats
allowed on the lake, so we will rely on each other(and our wet suits) in
case of cramps or other problems. Final swim plans will be made (by greater swimming minds than mine) once we
know the total number of swimmers. Most likely we will leave Wizard
Island in small groups with the slower swimmers leaving first followed by
faster swimmers while keeping an eye on each other at all times.

The water will be cold, around 61 or 62 degrees Fahrenheit so wet suits
and insulated caps will be required. Since we could be in the water for 3
hours or more we will work on a plan for fueling  during the swim. Other
groups that I have spoken with ate Goo but didn't bring anything for hydration because
they drank right out of the lake! How cool is that!

To prepare for Crater Lake, it is strongly recommended that you swim the
Applegate 10K. This is a fully supported, warm water (72 -74 degree) swim
in the middle of July.   Reportedly this is a beautiful swim.  Here is the info from last years Applegate 10K and we
will send out a link for the 2011 swim as soon as it is posted.
http://www.swimoregon.org/forms/meets/10ApplegateLakeEntry.pdf

Also, the Cascade Lake Series held at Elk Lake near Bend on July 29 -
31 2011 is a good warm-up for Crater Lake. There is a 3K on Friday night
and a 5K on Sunday. The water temp in the past has varied from the low 60's to the low 70's.

Here are the details for the Crater Lake Swim:

Date: Saturday August 20, 2011

Time: 9:55 am (This is when the boat leaves for Wizard Island)

Boat Reservations: If you think you might do the swim, request a
reservation for your boat ticket ASAP. Make sure to reserve the 9:55 am with the tour of Wizard Island. Other boat tours don't stop at the Island!  Reservation info for the boat in on the following web page: https://www.craterlakelodges.com/Activities-1843.html  If you don't make a reservation, you may try to get on a boat on a first come first served based on August 20th.

Places to stay: There are options to camp, stay in cabins or the lodge at
the lake. All of which may be reserved from the following web site:
https://www.craterlakelodges.com/reservations/

Social: This is a family friendly event with plenty to do for non-swimming
kids, spouses, friends, etc. We will plan some sort of dinner or
bar-be-que Saturday night so we can tell our stories of swimming in a
volcano!

Training: We will be doing longer lake swims in the Spring and Summer and
we will be asking our coaches to lay out a plan to prepare us for the
distance.

Water temp: Here is a link for the current temp of Crater Lake (don't
look). http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/weather/oclb.html

Rules: Are we allowed to do this?  Yes, the Park Service allows this, but we must give the boat tour operators the exact # of swimmers, so they know how many of their customers they will be picking up on Wizard Island.

A final warning. This is similar to doing a mountain climb: exerting
yourself in a beautiful yet potentially dangerous environment. If you are
considering swimming but are concerned about the distance, talk to your
coach. If your coach doesn't believe you are ready for this distance,
work out a plan to gain the coach's confidence, or pass on this event.

Email me if you are considering or are committed to doing the swim and I
will keep a list.

This same info will be posted on http://aquaducks.webs.com/apps/blog/

Prepare yourself for the swim of a lifetime and go AquaDucks!

Dan

p.s.  I am not planning this alone.  There is another dude with all kinds of body art on the planning committee.  Extra hint: it's not Warren.
